We hear this question a lot, in different forms: "My system is 12 years old, it still runs, but it keeps breaking down. Do I put more money into it, or replace it entirely?"

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but a few honest questions usually make the decision obvious.

1. How often are you calling a technician?

If you're calling once or twice a year for small fixes, modernizing (new compressor, automation, insulation) makes sense. If you're up to 4-5 service calls a year and each one costs more than the last, the system is telling you something: it's nearing the end, and repair costs are creeping toward the price of a new installation.

2. What refrigerant does it run on?

This matters more than it seems. Some older refrigerants are getting harder to find or more expensive, as European regulations phase them out gradually. If your system runs on one of these, a partial modernization might only be a temporary fix — full replacement often becomes unavoidable eventually anyway.

3. Has your business grown since it was installed?

A system sized for a smaller warehouse or production volume from 10 years ago can technically still "work" — but inefficiently: higher energy use, longer cooling times, faster wear. If your volume or space has changed significantly, a properly sized new system often pays for itself through lower energy bills.

4. What does each option actually cost?

The rule we use when talking with clients: if modernization (new parts, automation, maybe a high-performance compressor) exceeds 50-60% of the cost of a new system, replacement becomes a serious conversation. Below that threshold, modernizing is usually the smarter move.
